Questions people ask before they book.
If yours isn't here, the intro call is the place to ask it.
What's the first call like?
Thirty minutes, virtually, no prep, no pressure. You tell us what's going on. We tell you whether we think it's a good fit and what it would cost. If it isn't, we'll help you find the advisor who is.
Do I need to be in Southern California?
No. We meet with clients nationwide virtually. If you're in Southern California, whether that's Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Irvine, Laguna Beach, or anywhere between Los Angeles and San Diego, we can meet in person.
Is there a minimum?
No. Planning is a flat fee at any asset level, and investment management is optional.
How are you paid?
Only by you. A flat planning fee quoted in writing, plus an optional 0.50% if we manage your investments. No commissions, no product sales, no referral fees.
Why a flat planning fee?
Because the planning is the work, and most of our clients' complexity sits in a business, an equity grant, or a trust rather than in a brokerage account. So the planning fee is a flat retainer, set to match your situation. If we also manage your investments, that's a separate 0.50%, and it's optional.
How much does a financial planner cost at Luhman Wealth Partners?
A one-time plan starts at $5,000. Ongoing planning starts at $6,000 per year, a flat fee set to match your situation, not your account balance. Investment management is optional at 0.50% of the assets we manage. Every fee is quoted in writing before we start.
What is a fee-only financial planner, and is Luhman Wealth Partners one?
A fee-only financial planner is paid only by the client: no commissions, no product sales, no referral fees from anyone. Luhman Wealth Partners is fee-only and a fiduciary, which means we're required to act in your best interest at all times.
What's the difference between a flat planning fee and a percentage of assets?
Most advisors charge one percentage fee on the assets they manage, with the planning bundled in. We price the planning on its own, as a flat fee, so you can see what the advice costs and get it whether or not we manage your investments. If we do manage them, that's a separate 0.50%.
How is it billed?
The one-time plan in two installments, at the start and at delivery. Ongoing planning monthly. Investment management quarterly, from the accounts.
One-time plan or ongoing planning?
Both end with the same written plan. A one-time plan wraps up six months after your first discovery meeting, and the plan is yours. Ongoing planning keeps going: two to four review meetings a year, tax projections, equity grant reviews as they vest, and direct access between meetings.
How long does it take?
From the first call to the plan review is usually about two months.
Can I keep my accounts where they are?
Yes. We do the planning and coordinate with the manager you already have. If we manage your investments, the accounts are held at Altruist, in your name.
Are you a fiduciary?
Yes, at all times, and it's in the agreement. "Fee-only" and "fiduciary" aren't the same thing, and we're both.
Do you prepare tax returns or sell insurance?
No. We plan with your CPA year-round, and if you need coverage we'll say what kind and how much, then refer you to a fee-only broker.
What happens between meetings?
Email or call your advisor. That's part of the fee, not an extra. We reply within one business day.
Where is Luhman Wealth Partners located, and who do you work with?
We're based in Irvine, California, and work with clients across Orange County, including Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, and Laguna Beach, throughout Southern California from Los Angeles to San Diego, and nationwide virtually. Most of our clients are business owners, employees with equity compensation, inheritors and trustees, and other high-net-worth households with complex financial lives.
